Vang Stone

Near Vang Church is an unusual stone, carved with pictures and runes. The stone was raised in about the year 1000, when Norway was in a period of transition from paganism to Christianity. The stone is about two metres high, and the front is richly decorated with carvings including an imaginary animal, a lion-like figure, foliage and braided ribbons. There are 42 runes carved into the stone, which have been interpreted as, "The Goose-sons raised this stone in memory of Gunnar, their nephew".
