Kongssetet Avaldsnes

Avaldsnes is Norway's oldest royal seat of power. Harald the Fair-haired had one of his estates here and he made it his main residence after the Battle of Hafrsfjord. It was also here at Avaldsnes that Olav Haraldsson and the mighty Erling Sjalgsson met, while a third king, Håkon Håkonsson, built the church of Avaldsnes around the year 1250. It was royal chapel and dedicated to Olav the Pious. Concerts, exhibitions, guided tours of the sites of historical events and a Viking market are some of the activities on the program of the annual Viking Festival at Karmøy.
