Sandven Hotel

The hotel itself, "Sjøhuset" (boathouse) and "Tingstova" (the old court) are based on a license given by King Oscar I on May 1 1857. Today's hotel was built in the Swiss chalet style in 1898 at the harbour of Norheimsund. It greets us like a white swan with its mirror image in the Hardangerfjord. Around the hotel there is a large, nice garden, where two enormous 100 years old drooping birches are characteristic elements. The glacier Folgefonna at the other side of the Hardangerfjord complements the scenery. The hotel has been restored to rival its former splendour. The interior is a pleasure to behold, and the old banqueting hall in particular, with its rich decorations and stencilled paintings, is breathtaking. As a whole the interior is characterized by classical Norwegian and European antiques, adapted to the flourishing tourist era at the end of the 19th century. The rooms are renovated in the classical style. Most of the bathrooms are tiled with marble and equipped with heating cables. A solid wing chair as well as very comfortable beds characterize the rooms. Sandven are designed also for courses of different kinds, and the rooms are furnished with television sets with two Norwegian channels in addition to CNN and Discovery.
